The Story of Philosophy

The Story of Philosophy : The Lives and Opinions of the Greater Philosophers by Will Durant

Do you think Philosophy is a waste of time, a pursuit without value ? Well think again. In "The Story of Philosophy", Will Durant presents the thoughts of the great philosophers of the Western World in a lucid and highly understandable style. One of the greatest revelations in this book is the insight of how philosophy has been the leading discipline in the evolution of the thinking process. For each new way of looking at things, comes a flood of new concepts. These concepts lead to the innovations that are usually attributed to our hard disciplines such as science.

After reading this book you get a feel for the notion that fundamental changes in the way we look at our world precedes the waves of innovation that make up our technologies. We some times miss this relationship because the philosophical shifts are fewer and farther in the past then the science that precedes the innovations.

In addition to this insight, the entire book is very fascinating reading. You can see that our current way of thinking about things is the legacy of these great philosophers. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book and recommend it for anyone who has even the faintest interest in the evolution of western thought.

3001 : The Final Odyssey

3001: The Final Odyssey is the final installment of a four part saga that has been with us now, for almost 50 years. The story starts at the dawn of man and concludes in the 31rst century. For me, as well as for a lot of us, it all started on the silver screen in 1969 when we observed some pre-human primates scurrying around a rather intimidating monolith. One of the primates tosses an animal bone, that he was using for a weapon, high into the air and we were cinema-ported to an orbiting space station in the year 2001. At the end of 2001: A space Odyssey, we are left with far more questions then answers.

A few of these mysteries are made a little more clear in the second installment - 2010, also depicted on the Silver Screen. More of the cosmic riddle is clarified in the book 2061, the 3rd installment which never made it to movie land.

Welcome to earth’s orbit; year 3001, a time of vacuum energy, asteroid mining and braincaps. 3001 was written by Arthur C. Clarke, one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time and inventor of communications satellite technology.

Clarke does a marvelous job of projecting our current technology and science into our future. 3001 is great science fiction spinning an intriguing story around the book’s leading character. It also resolves those hanging questions generated from the other 3 installments of this odyssey. It is a fast reading story jammed pack with science, science fiction and prophetic insights into our future.

At the end of the book, Clarke does and interesting critique on the accuracy of his own projections made in the 50 years spanning the portrayal of this epic tale.

This is must read material for science fiction patrons and is also is of a quality to entertain anyone who likes to read.

"From the moment I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. 3001: The Final Odyssey is a tour de force that finally answers the questions that sparked the imagination of an entire generation." -- Buzz Aldrin
